Our Mission
Influenced by Carol’s hope that no one stands alone, the mission of the Carol McDevitt Foundation is to provide support and resources to those diagnosed with breast cancer.
Our Story
The pink road began long before Carol started her journey battling Breast Cancer. It started with her family, friends, and the people she encountered in her life who were dealing with all different types of cancer. Some survived, while others lost their battle, with each one making a lasting impression on her that she would use to educate others. Then, in late 2006 at the age of 39, Carol found herself on the path to all things pink…she found a lump.
She had the mastectomy followed by chemo, and finally radiation. She dealt with the hair loss, getting a wig, and all of the other challenges that cancer brought. She continued to live her life. She was working and doing all things that were her “normal” without cancer. Her determination to beat breast cancer remained strong. She set goals, one of them being to hit her 5 year anniversary of being cancer free. That would be when she would be a true survivor of this beast.
Flash forward to 2009, her cancer is back and it spread. She immediately started radiation on her brain because of how the cancer had metastasized. This time was different for many reasons and along the way Carol learned things, things that could have been done differently the first time, things that would help her family, things that would help with her job. It was these things that sparked the idea that people need to be helped.
That is when she asked us to make sure that whatever we do, we work to help at least one. One person, one family, one group — whatever the case may be — to help them get through and have less to worry about so they could focus on their fight to beat their cancer. Carol’s fight was an inspiration to all who knew her.
In the afternoon of May 15, 2010, just days before her 43rd birthday, Carol said her farewell to us and while she might not have hit her goal to truly call herself a survivor, part of her survives in each of us to do the work she asked and to help others.
The journey down the path that lead us to the road we travel today is a different story for each of us but it leads us all to the same place and that is doing our part to follow Carol’s hope in making sure that NO ONE STANDS ALONE.
